Cucumbers and Okra Pickles

My cucumbers are close to producing! Check out my little yellow blossom!

I actually thought these guys were eggplant when I first planted them, and moved them over the weekend to their proper cucumber position. Carl built me this little makeshift bamboo terrace and we're off to the races.

I love cucumbers. I even like the way they smell! And I hope I'm going to try my hand at pickles soon. Although I am more interested in picking okra. That's right. Pickled okra.

Don't worry, I thought it sounded gross the first time I heard it, too. Before my life changing introduction to these tasty treats, my only experience with okra was of the steamed variety. I was at a boyfriend's house in high school and his mother took some raw okra, put it in the microwave in a colander over a plate of water for a few minutes and served it. No salt. No pepper. No hot sauce. Nothing. It tasted like boiled snot. When I didn't eat it, the father leaned over real close and told me quite firmly: "We clean our plates in this house."

I didn't date that guy much longer.

As you can imagine, when Carl picked up a jar of these happy little pickles my reaction was a little extreme ("I am NOT eating those. You can't make me, either. Get away from me! AAAAAAAHHH!"). But upon further inspection and a little sniffing, they didn't seem snotty or slimy at all. And, they are only 5 calories per pickle. 5 CALORIES! You just can't beat that.

I'm still waiting on my red okra seeds to come in so I can start those plants. I hope to see them soon!
